On June 3, the first auction for the sale of the Kosmos cinema building, located at 5 Polyova Square in Zhytomyr, took place.
Zhytomyr City Council approved the sale of the former cinema in April 2025. A key condition of the sale was preserving the property’s social and cultural function.
Council members also insisted on the preservation of the mosaic on the building’s façade. The mosaic, made from smalt and aluminum zodiac figures, was created based on a sketch by local artist Oleksandr Kostiuk.
Four bidders participated in the auction, which started at UAH 12.12 million. The winning bid came from Zhytomyr-based Standard Gyps LLC, whose ultimate beneficiary is Serhii Rudyk.
The Kosmos cinema has been out of operation since 2006. Built in 1987, the two-story building has a total area of 2,405.3 sq. m and is currently in poor condition, with physical deterioration estimated at 63%.
